Depression and Anxiety Treatment
Depression and anxiety can be a common mood problem for teens and adults. In Seattle some people also experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which can also create feelings of low energy and depression. In some cases medication is needed for short term use and occasionally longer term use may be indicated.
In my experience there are things to try, alone or in addition to medicine that can improve how you feel.
Some herbs and vitamins can be helpful as are exercise, diet and therapy. I always get screening blood work to be sure there is not another cause or contributing factor to how a person is feeling. I also encourage my patients to see a counselor. Some people have worries about counseling and therapy or have had a bad experience in the past. I feel therapists are like teachers, some are better than others, and we all have and need teachers in our lives.
I can and do prescribe antidepressants. At times I will refer my patients for a medication evaluation by a specialist if we feel progress is not being made and there is a concern that a different medication(s) could be helpful. |
